Eric Satchwell 1926 – 2012British modernist painter and maker of reliefs.Satchwell was born in Northampton, he studied in Northampton and London, at the Institute of Education where he gained his teaching Diploma. He was Art Master at Salford Grammar School between 1950 and 1959. He moved to Ilkley in Yorkshire and was a leading member of the group of modern painters in the town.“Other members of a group more or less clustered round Ilkley Art Club, who formed a network of debate round modern painters – Eric Satchwell, Marie Walker Last, Margaret Firth, Dorothy Bradford. And as well, Derek Hyatt, Megan and Michael Dawson, Bert Roberts, Shirley and Olaf Bork. With them the connections go to Ilkley Training College to the Yorkshire Arts Association and Leeds College of Art. In the words Arthur Kitching, “From the early sixties to the early seventies, the mood of Modernism in Ilkley prevailed. Art was a real thing that could be talked about and done. We suspected that we were not avant garde but we were learning all the time.”He exhibited in the North and further afield and his work is held in many Public and private collections including Manchester City Art gallery and Salford City Art Gallery.
