Ilkley events and traditions
From spring carnival to autumn books and bonfires, Ilkley likes a get-together.
May Day and Ilkley Carnival
Ilkley has a long tradition of spring celebrations, with a carnival usually held around the May bank holiday: a procession of floats, bands and costumed groups through the town, followed by stalls, fairground rides and entertainment. It is run by volunteers and supports local good causes.
Bonfire night and fireworks
Around 5 November, Ilkley has traditionally held an organised bonfire and fireworks display, typically run by local volunteer groups such as the Round Table or similar organisations. Organised displays are much safer than garden fireworks, so look out for local announcements each autumn.
Fairs and markets
Travelling funfairs visit at points in the year, and the town hosts seasonal and specialist markets, from food and craft fairs to Christmas events with late-night shopping and lights. The town centre also has regular market days (see Shops & Food).
Ilkley Literature Festival
Founded in 1973, the Ilkley Literature Festival is one of the oldest and largest literature festivals in the north of England. It usually takes place over a couple of weeks in the autumn (traditionally October), with author talks, poetry, workshops and a children's programme at venues around the town, plus a "fringe" of free and informal events.
Other regulars
Ilkley also hosts music, arts and sporting events, and moorland fell races have a long history here. Local notice boards, the Manor House, the King's Hall & Winter Garden and the town's community groups are good places to find out what's on.
