Middleton Woods
Across the river from the town, a hillside of old woodland turns a hazy violet-blue each spring.
Middleton Woods climb the slope on the north side of the Wharfe, reached from the town by crossing the river near the Lido and heading uphill. It is a mixed, partly ancient woodland crossed by public footpaths, and in spring the ground is carpeted with native bluebells.
When to see the bluebells
Bluebells usually peak from late April into mid-May, but timing shifts with the season: a cold spring can push it later. A dry, bright morning or evening shows the colour at its best.
Please be bluebell-friendly
Native bluebells are protected in the UK and are slow to recover once trampled; leaves crushed underfoot can take years to come back. Stay on the paths, don't pick them, and keep dogs close.
